Article 53 of the Treaty of Tientsin, in November

1924, and June 1925, while on June 21st, 1924

Ar. chen had asked His Majesty's consul General

at Canton and the British Senior Haval Officer

to arrange for the aotire co-operation of a

British gunboat in the hahning aree.

It was in these conditions that the

episode of the "Irene" osourred. The facts of

the ease are as follows:- On October 19th, 1927.

whilst on the high seas on a voyage from Shanghai

tomoy, the "rene" was seized by pirates who

had embarked under the guise of peaceful

passenger

The ship's officera wez overpowered

and the ship's course was altered to Bias Bay.

while the Tessel was in the hands of the pirates

a Chinese cabin boy was shot through the cheat

in the course of promiscuous firing to intimidate

the passengers. At about 8 p.z. on October

20t H.M. subasrine L.4, which was stationed at

the entrance to Bias Bay in accordance with the

suggestion made, as stated above, by Mr. Chen,
